Announced Nov. 3, the new city program helps income-qualified homeowners cover the deductible on an active roof-damage insurance claim. Funds are limited and first come, first served.
NICEVILLE, Fla. - Floridant -- If you own a home in Fort Walton Beach and a damaged roof is sitting unrepaired because of the insurance deductible, assistance is now available for qualifying households. On Nov. 3, Fort Walton Beach announced a program that pays up to $2,000 per household toward the deductible on an active homeowner's insurance claim for roof damage.
The money comes from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development through a Community Development Block Grant. It does not go to the homeowner. Payment is made directly to the contractor, and the roof repair or replacement must satisfy the insurance claim's requirements.
To qualify, you must own a home within the Fort Walton Beach city limits and live in it as your primary residence. Your household income must be at or below HUD's income eligibility limits, and documentation is required. You also need an active homeowner's insurance policy, a valid claim breakdown, and a licensed contractor.

The city limits part matters. A Niceville or Shalimar address, or a home in unincorporated Okaloosa County, does not qualify under this program. Neither does a rental or a second home.
Grant funds are limited and awarded on a first-come, first-served basis, the city says. Details are on the City of Fort Walton Beach's Community Development Block Grant webpage, or by phone at 850-833-9500.
