The American Dyslexia Association highlights word formulation, a technique from the AFS Method that teaches every word through its image, its sound, and its meaning. Brain research from the University of Washington later confirmed the approach.
SARASOTA, Fla. - Floridant -- A child with dyslexia can copy a word ten times and still misspell it the next morning. The American Dyslexia Association (ADA) is drawing attention to word formulation, a technique that takes a different route, and to a free online collection of 1,612 English words prepared this way at wordformulation.com.
Dr. Astrid Kopp-Duller described word formulation in 1997 as part of the symptom training in the AFS Method. Every word is learned in three steps. First, the child works with the word image, building the word from modeling clay, tiles, or letters. Second, the child hears the word sound, spelled out and sounded out, and speaks along. Third, the child explores the word meaning: the part of speech, the word family, and sentences of their own.

Brain research from the University of Washington later confirmed why these three parts matter. In 2003, Elizabeth Aylward, Virginia Berninger, and colleagues reported in Neurology that after 28 hours of comprehensive reading instruction, brain activation in children with dyslexia closely resembled that of typical readers. In 2006, the team described distinct brain signatures for how a word sounds, how it is spelled, and its meaningful parts.
"Parents often tell us their child practiced a word all week and still got it wrong on the test," said Dr. Elsa Palmer, Director of Information and Member Services at the American Dyslexia Association. "Word formulation gives that child a word they have seen, heard, and understood. Ten minutes a day with one word is enough to start."
The collection is offered free of charge by the Dyslexia Research Center USA. It covers nine parts of speech, from basic vocabulary to common error words. Every word comes with a word puzzle, a word search game, audio, and a printable PDF. Certified Dyslexia Trainers combine word formulation with attention and sensory perception training in individual sessions.
