FORT MYERS, Fla. - Floridant -- Stevens Construction has started a multi-phase renovation of the Community Center of Boca Grande, located at 131 1st St. West, announced Dan Adams, executive vice president/partner, Stevens Construction, Inc.

Managed by the Friends of Boca Grande, The Community Center of Boca Grande originally planned renovations within its multiple buildings to better serve the various user groups of the campus and the community. These plans were in design when Hurricane Milton heavily damaged Boca Grande and the Community Center on Oct. 9, 2024, resulting in an immediate need to address damage and make improvements to fortify the structures against future storms, which revised the originally planned project scope. Immediate hurricane remediation of several buildings has already been completed with additional project under construction and currently in design.

The renovations are carefully sequenced to allow the Community Center of Boca Grande to continue operations and hosting community events. The upcoming timeline of each building is highlighted below:
  • Crowninshield Building: Already under construction and slated for completion this spring, this 4,658-square-foot historical building, originally built in 1929, is undergoing renovations to the multi-purpose room, storage, foyer, restrooms and workroom.
  • The Community Center of Boca Grande: Slated for completion this spring, the Community Center is currently undergoing renovations which include foundation improvements to strengthen structure integrity for future storms. Additional renovations for the east and west wings of the Community Center are still in design and the overall project is expected to be completed in early 2026.
  • The Island School: Starting construction April 2025, The Island School is receiving a 2,520-square-foot expansion which will provide additional offices, resource lab, counseling and restrooms. Flood protection and new fire suppression systems are also being added to the existing school.
  • Theater/Auditorium: Currently in design and slated for completion in early 2027, a new 9,200-square-foot, fully handicap accessible auditorium will be constructed with expanded seating, lobby and upgraded audio visual capabilities.
  • Teacherage and Dishong Bowen House: With expected completion in later 2027, these buildings are being elevated to protect against future moisture damage and flooding.
  • Additional Renovations: Site improvements such as new paving, sidewalks, covered walkways, exterior decks and landscaping improvements are also included in the project.

The Stevens Construction team includes Director of Preconstruction Nick Burkel, Senior Project Manager Jay Wolfe, Senior Superintendent David Erb and Project Administrator Morgan Thie. Parker/Mudgett/Smith Architects is the architect of record.
