WASHINGTON, Nov. 12, 2024 ~ Last week, at the annual CLIA Cruise Forward conference in Miami, the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) shared some exciting news from their latest study. The 2023 Global Economic Impact Study revealed that the cruise industry had its highest-ever global economic impact and surpassed 2019 as the benchmark year for performance.

According to the study, in 2023, the cruise industry generated a total economic impact of $168.6 billion globally, which is a significant 9% increase from 2019. This growth in economic activity also led to an increase in industry-supported jobs. The study reported that the cruise industry contributed 1.6 million incremental jobs in 2023 and paid $56.9 billion in wages, representing a growth of 37% and 13%, respectively, from 2019. It is worth noting that out of these jobs, 77% were land-based.

The report also highlighted that the cruise sector's contribution to global GDP was $85.6 billion, with its growth outpacing that of the global economy. These figures demonstrate the steady evolution of the cruise industry, driven by the increasing popularity of cruise vacations.

Kelly Craighead, president and CEO of CLIA, emphasized the importance of the cruise industry's contribution to the global economy and job market. She stated, "The cruise industry is an important contributor to the global economy, generating billions of dollars in economic output and supporting millions of jobs." She also added that as demand for cruising continues to grow, CLIA member cruise lines are committed to preserving destinations' integrity and cultural heritage for both residents and visitors.

The economic impact of cruising extends beyond just one sector; it benefits multiple industries such as transportation, aviation, food and beverage, lodging, manufacturing, technology, agriculture, travel agencies, and a robust supply chain. In fact, according to CLIA research cited by Craighead, 60% of cruise passengers return to a destination they first visited on a cruise for a longer stay, further contributing to the local economy.

As the cruise industry continues to grow, so does its commitment to sustainable tourism and destination stewardship. To showcase this commitment, CLIA has released its new Guiding Principles for Responsible Tourism. This publication identifies the Sustainable Development Goals that the industry is contributing to and offers a framework for collaboration between the cruise sector, ports, and destinations to preserve the world's most treasured destinations' integrity and cultural heritage for future generations.

In conclusion, CLIA's latest study highlights the significant economic impact of the cruise industry globally and reaffirms its role as a robust job creator. As cruising continues to gain popularity, it is crucial for all stakeholders to work together towards sustainable tourism practices to ensure that these treasured destinations are preserved for years to come.
