Organization requests personal care items from the community this season
FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. - Floridant -- Meals on Wheels South Florida is one of 5,000 Meals on Wheels programs across the country working every day to protect millions of seniors from the threats of isolation and hunger – an effort made possible by generous donors and volunteers who help in communities just like Broward County across America.
Each holiday season, Meals on Wheels South Florida's aim is to ensure our clients know they are cared for and about. In addition to the nutritious meals and safety checks they already receive; Meals on Wheels South Florida staff and volunteers visit clients during the week of Christmas and present them with a gift-wrapped box filled with personal care items. These boxes are delivered to 100-150 clients who are generally alone and without family to visit them during the holidays.
Every year, assistance is requested from the community to donate personal care items, pack, and decorate boxes, and deliver to the clients. Items being collected for the holiday gift boxes include shampoo, conditioner, soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, lotion, detergent, washcloths and more.

"Meals on Wheels South Florida is supported every day by community partners, donors, and volunteers standing up to lend a caring hand to their aging neighbors," said Mark Adler, Executive Director for Meals on Wheels South Florida. "As we celebrate the 20th annual holiday gift box program, we want our clients to remember they are never alone by providing them with a special holiday surprise."
Members of the community can get involved with the Holiday Gift Box Program by donating personal care items or making financial gifts to help purchase items. Items are being received at the Meals on Wheels headquarters located at 451 N. State Road 7 in Plantation Monday through Friday between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. until December 15th. Those wishing to donate or volunteer for this program can call 954.714.6924 or visit mowsoflo.org/holidayopportunities for more information.
Meals on Wheels South Florida is funded under the Older Americans Act and Fair Share Dollars from local municipalities through the State of Florida's Department of Elder Affairs and The Area Agency on Aging of Broward County.
