In a recent episode of his podcast, family law mediator Matthew Brickman explains the significant changes to family law in Florida as it affects matters on paternity.
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - Floridant -- "House Bill 775 relates to the Shared Parental Responsibility after Establishment of Paternity which makes significant changes to paternity in Florida. Matthew Brickman, founder of iMediate Inc. and host of the MediateThis! Podcast, explained in a recent episode how those changes permanently reshape how paternity is handled in Florida.
Prior to this bill, he explained, "Dissolution of marriage proceeding with children, or in a paternity case, the issues of parenting were to be worked out between the parties. If the parties were not able to, well, the court would decide it, but most judges don't want to get involved in that because that's unique to each family."

But after the bill the statute now says that the court shall order that parental responsibility be shared unless the court finds that shared parental responsibility to be detrimental to the child.
In his words, "Well, what that means is that means that moms and dads are on equal footing. They are two equal 50 50 CEOs of the company Child, Inc. That means that all decisions are run between the two parents. Nobody has 51% control of the company. It's equal, say, equal decision making."
