OCALA, Fla. ~ Ocala, Florida - Lieutenant Governor Jeanette Nuñez, alongside the Florida Department of Health, Department of Children and Families, Agency for Persons with Disabilities, and community partners, announced the launch of the Florida Swimming Lesson Voucher Program today.

The program, signed into law by Governor DeSantis, aims to provide free swimming lessons to eligible families in Florida. This initiative is a part of the state's efforts to promote water safety and reduce the risk of drowning among children.

Lieutenant Governor Nuñez expressed her pride in launching this program and highlighted its importance in equipping young children with life-saving skills. "The Florida Swimming Lesson Voucher Program reaffirms our administration's commitment to the safety and well-being of children in and around water," she stated.

According to Deputy Secretary for Health Dr. Kenneth Scheppke, swimming lessons are not just about learning a skill but also a vital tool in saving lives. He emphasized that by providing free lessons, Florida is empowering families to protect their children and prevent tragic incidents.

During the launch event at Florida Aquatics Swimming and Training center in Marion County, a water demonstration was conducted to showcase the importance of swimming skills. The demonstration highlighted simple techniques and safety measures that are taught during typical swimming lessons for young children.

Department of Children and Families Secretary Shevaun Harris stressed on the need for parents and caregivers to remain vigilant about water safety even as summer transitions into fall. "We know that most drownings happen during non-swim time," she said. "Today's announcement highlights the dedication and importance our state puts on ensuring that everyone has access to swim lessons."

Agency for Persons with Disabilities Director Taylor Hatch also commended Governor DeSantis and Lieutenant Governor Nuñez for their commitment towards ensuring safety for all Floridians, including those with disabilities. "Understanding the importance of education and participation in swim lessons will ensure that Floridians of all abilities will be able to enjoy the state's beautiful natural environment safely," he stated.

Kenneth D. Colen, Trustee of Circle Square Foundation, expressed excitement about participating in the new swimming voucher program and its potential to keep Marion County kids safe in the water.

The event also highlighted key steps that all Floridians and visitors can take to stay safe in and around water. These include always supervising children around water, considering swim lessons, learning CPR and first aid, ensuring pool barriers meet state law requirements, following life jacket laws, and checking local conditions before heading out to the water.
