~ Jacksonville Mayor Donna Deegan announced today that the city will be investing a total of $7.7 million in three important projects. The largest portion of this investment, $4 million, will go towards renovating two fire stations in the city.

One of the fire stations set to receive renovations is Fire Station #45, located at 15725 Sawpit Road. This station, which was originally a volunteer fire station, is in need of updates to support the full-time firefighters who now work there. The other station, Fire Station #54 at 4220 Jones Road, will be remodeled to accommodate a tanker. This addition is crucial for the city's ISO rating, which is used to determine insurance rates and has now been permanently assigned to this station.

In addition to the fire station renovations, the city will also be building a new Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) wash facility at 2610 Fairfax Street. This facility, which will cost $692,823, will be used to wash and inspect firefighter PPE as required by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). It will also serve as a central location for storing additional PPE for quick access during emergency situations.

The third project receiving funding is the creation of a state-of-the-art Esports Arena at the University of North Florida's John A. Delaney Student Union. The city has allocated $3 million towards this project in hopes of attracting more students to careers in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). The arena will also be able to host national competitions that bring visitors and economic development to Jacksonville while boosting enrollment at UNF.

Mayor Deegan expressed her excitement about these investments and their potential impact on the city. "We continue to make investments that create the greatest return for our citizens and these projects are no exception," she stated. "The fire station renovations and wash facility will ensure our firefighters have the resources needed to keep citizens safe and insurance rates down. The UNF esports arena will help us build a next-generation workforce and position Jacksonville as a leader in the rapidly growing esports industry." With these projects, the city is taking important steps towards improving safety, economic development, and education in Jacksonville.
