~ Jacksonville, FL - As the cold weather continues to grip Duval County, residents are taking extra precautions to stay warm and safe. The City of Jacksonville Emergency Preparedness Division has issued a reminder for residents to follow the "5 P's of Cold Weather Preparedness" in order to protect themselves and their loved ones.
The first "P" stands for Protect People, which includes dressing in warm layers and wearing hats and gloves. The second "P" is for Protect Pets, as outdoor pets should be brought inside or provided with a warm shelter. The third "P" is for Protect Plants, as covering cold-sensitive plants can prevent them from being damaged by the dangerously low temperatures. The fourth "P" is for Protect Pipes, as covering them and allowing outdoor faucets to slowly drip can prevent them from freezing and breaking. And finally, the fifth "P" is for Practice Fire Safety, as using safe heating sources indoors is crucial to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning.
With the National Weather Service forecasting even colder temperatures with wind chills in the 20s, the Emergency Preparedness Division has activated their Warming Center Contingency Plan. This plan states that when temperatures reach 27 degrees or colder, the City of Jacksonville Warming Center will be open overnight at the Legends Center located at 5130 Soutel Drive.

The Warming Center will be open from 9 p.m. on Thursday, January 9th until 9 a.m. on Friday, January 10th. JTA buses will be available to transport vulnerable individuals to the center and it will be staffed with water available onsite. Residents utilizing the Warming Center are advised to bring their own bedding, personal hygiene items, and entertainment.
In addition to the Warming Center, non-profit partners at area shelters are also providing cold-weather shelter services for those in need. These shelters include City Rescue Mission on West State Street, Mission House in Jacksonville Beach, Sulzbacher Center on East Adams Street and Springfield Boulevard, and Trinity Rescue Mission on West Union Street.
