IMMOKALEE, Fla. - Floridant -- Immokalee Fair Housing Alliance, a nonprofit organization with a mission to eliminate substandard and overcrowded rental housing for farmworker families and low-income families, has received a grant for $1 million from The Schoen Foundation to help construct the third 16-unit apartment building.
"We are incredibly grateful to The Schoen Foundation for this extremely generous and inspiring grant" says Arol Buntzman, chairman and CEO of the Immokalee Fair Housing Alliance. "These funds will help us to provide an additional 16 hurricane-resistant and affordable homes for hardworking families in Immokalee. Being able to move out of trailers and shacks that are in appalling condition, yet unconscionably expensive, will be transformational for dozens of children and their parents."
The Immokalee Fair Housing Alliance is developing a hurricane-safe and affordable community of eight buildings, each with 16 apartments for low-income families. The first building in the new community is complete, and residents are expected to move in by the end of the year. A second building is currently under construction. Once fully completed, the community will house more than 640 people.

In addition to the apartment buildings, the Immokalee Fair Housing Alliance is building two playgrounds, a sports field and a community center that will provide space for pre- and after school tutoring, adult education, health counseling, as well as meeting and study rooms.
