~ Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. - Governor Ron DeSantis addressed the 81st Annual Convention of the Florida Professional Firefighters today in Palm Beach Gardens, where he signed House Bill 929 into law. This legislation aims to strengthen Florida's commitment to the health and safety of its firefighters.
During his remarks, Governor DeSantis acknowledged the bravery and sacrifice of firefighters who put their lives on the line to save others. He emphasized that their heroic work takes a toll on both their physical and mental well-being. HB 929 recognizes these risks and aims to provide better support for firefighters.
The bill updates the Florida Firefighters Occupational Safety and Health Act by expanding its scope to include occupational diseases and suicide prevention. It also directs the Department of Financial Services' Division of the State Fire Marshal to adopt clear rules to mitigate health risks, including mental health impacts and exposure to toxic substances.

Under this new law, fire departments are required to purchase gear free of hazardous chemicals once it becomes commercially available. Employers must also notify firefighters if their current gear contains toxic substances. The Division is now responsible for monitoring mental health impacts, including suicide risks, and establishing prevention protocols. Additionally, standard firefighter shifts will be limited to 42 hours per week in order to reduce burnout.
Governor DeSantis has made it a priority since taking office to ensure that first responders have the necessary resources, protections, and recognition they deserve. In 2019, he signed legislation granting cancer benefits to firefighters and provided $2 million in disaster relief funding for first responders after Hurricane Ian. Last month, he also signed legislation expanding compensation for those injured during official training. In his most recent budget recommendation, Governor DeSantis proposed more than $118 million in funding to raise first responder pay, including a 25% raise for state-employed firefighters.
With the signing of HB 929 into law, Florida is taking significant steps towards prioritizing the health and safety of its firefighters. Governor DeSantis and state officials are committed to supporting these brave men and women who risk their lives every day to protect their communities.
