WINTER HAVEN, Fla. ~ Winter Haven, Florida - Governor Ron DeSantis has been praised for his strong stance on law and order, as well as his efforts to combat the influx of fentanyl and other illegal drugs into the state. In addition, he has taken steps to address the issue of illegal immigration.
Last year, Governor DeSantis signed legislation that established the State Assistance for Fentanyl Eradication (SAFE) grant program. This program provides law enforcement with the necessary funding to conduct large-scale drug operations across Florida.
The state has also implemented a series of laws aimed at cracking down on crime, curbing illegal immigration, increasing penalties for drug and human traffickers, and recruiting more law enforcement officers to serve in Florida.
Governor DeSantis has also taken action against two state attorneys who refused to carry out their duties and enforce the law. He removed them from office, stating that "leadership matters" when it comes to maintaining law and order.
Attorney General Ashley Moody commended Florida's proactive leadership and diligent law enforcement efforts, which have contributed to the state's prosperity and record-breaking tourism numbers. She also emphasized the importance of supporting law enforcement officers in their dangerous work.
Executive Director of Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles Dave Kerner echoed this sentiment, stating that Governor DeSantis celebrates the work of law enforcement officers instead of demonizing them. He added that this support from leadership is deeply appreciated by those in law enforcement.

Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd also commended Governor DeSantis and the Florida legislature for their support of law enforcement. He stated that because Florida is a "law-and-order state," its communities are thriving and it is a safe place to live, work, and play.
Florida Department of Law Enforcement Commissioner Mark Glass highlighted how Governor DeSantis' leadership has led to hundreds of arrests of dangerous drug traffickers and the removal of deadly drugs from streets across the state. He also noted that Florida serves as a national role model in contrast to crime-plagued "blue states."
In 2023, Governor DeSantis approved $20 million in funding for the SAFE program, which is administered by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. This state-funded grant has been instrumental in helping local law enforcement agencies fight against drug trafficking and seize large quantities of deadly drugs.
Some notable successes of the SAFE program include the January 2024 arrest of 11 suspects trafficking fentanyl and cocaine by the Polk County Sheriff's Office, resulting in the seizure of 30 pounds of cocaine and nearly 8 pounds of fentanyl. In March 2024, Santa Rosa and Escambia County Sheriffs' offices, working with the DEA, seized 3 grams of fentanyl, marijuana, prescription pills, and several handguns.

The operation resulted in the confiscation of over $500,000 worth of illegal drugs including10.7 kilos offentanyl, cocaine oxycodone, marijuana, and three illegal firearms. In total, the SAFE program has led to over 650 arrests and the seizure of more than 145 pounds of fentanyl, 220 pounds of cocaine, and 60,000 fentanyl pills.

His efforts have resulted in a safer state for its residents and visitors, as well as a strong message to those who seek to engage in illegal activities. With continued support from state leadership and law enforcement agencies, Florida will continue to be a model for other states in the fight against crime and drug trafficking.
