~ Governor Ron DeSantis has taken swift action in response to the impending threat of Tropical Storm Milton. On Sunday, October 6, 2024, he issued Executive Order (EO) 24-215, amending Executive Order 24-214 and declaring a state of emergency for an additional 16 counties in Florida. This brings the total number of counties under a state of emergency to 51.
The decision to amend the executive order was made after careful consideration of the latest forecast for Tropical Storm Milton. The storm is expected to rapidly intensify over the next 72 hours as it moves eastward over the central and eastern Gulf of Mexico. It is projected to make landfall along the Florida West Coast as a catastrophic major hurricane, bringing with it life-threatening storm surge and severe wind gusts.
Governor DeSantis recognized that this amendment was necessary in order to ensure that recovery efforts and those affected by the disaster receive continued support from the state. As Governor, he has a responsibility to protect the people of Florida from any potential dangers posed by this emergency.
