~ Governor Ron DeSantis has taken swift action in response to the potential threat of Tropical Cyclone Nine, issuing an amended executive order on Tuesday, September 24, 2024. The new order, EO 24-209, increases the number of counties under a state of emergency to 61 in preparation for the storm.

The initial state of emergency was declared on September 23, 2024 for 41 counties across Florida. However, with Potential Tropical Cyclone Nine located just 120 miles west-southwest of Grand Cayman and moving northwest at 8 mph, Governor DeSantis deemed it necessary to expand the declaration.

According to the National Hurricane Center, Potential Tropical Cyclone Nine is expected to develop into a tropical storm this afternoon over the northwestern Caribbean Sea and could become a hurricane over the eastern Gulf of Mexico by Wednesday. Computer forecast models also indicate a high likelihood of significant intensification and potential for it to become a major hurricane before reaching the northeastern Gulf Coast on Thursday.

The governor's office warns that this system is expected to be large and powerful upon landfall and poses a significant threat of life-threatening storm surge and damaging wind gusts for the Florida Gulf Coast. Additionally, due to its size, impacts such as storm surge, wind, and rainfall are expected to extend well beyond its center. The faster forward approach of this system may also result in strong winds penetrating farther inland even after landfall.

Tropical Storm Watches are currently in effect for eighteen Florida counties while Hurricane Watches cover another eighteen counties. Storm Surge Watches have also been issued from the Southwest Florida Coast to the central Florida Panhandle.

Furthermore, recent heavy rainfall from Hurricane Debby has left water tables and riverine levels above normal across much of north and west-central Florida. Additional heavy rainfall from Potential Tropical Cyclone Nine could lead to significant riverine flooding that may prolong impacts for an extended period.

Governor DeSantis has also expressed concern for the potential damage to critical infrastructure, including major interstates, roadways, bridges, airports, schools, hospitals, and power grids. As such, an amendment to Executive Order 24-208 was deemed necessary to ensure continued support for recovery efforts and those affected by this disaster.

In accordance with his responsibilities as Governor of Florida and the authority vested in him by the Florida Constitution and Emergency Management Act, Governor DeSantis has promulgated Executive Order 24-209. This amended order takes immediate effect and will expire upon the expiration of Executive Order 24-208.

The full amended executive order can be found on the governor's website or by clicking here. The governor urges all residents in the affected counties to stay informed and follow any evacuation orders or safety precautions issued by local authorities.
