~ On Friday, August 2, 2024, Governor Ron DeSantis took action to protect the citizens of Florida by issuing Executive Order (EO) 24-157. This order amends the previous EO 24-156, which declared a state of emergency for fifty-four counties in Florida due to the potential dangers presented by Invest 97L.
The National Hurricane Center issued its first advisory at 11:00 AM EDT on August 2, upgrading and renaming Invest 97L as Potential Tropical Cyclone Four. This storm is currently located 360 miles southeast of Key West, Florida and is expected to move over Cuba today before crossing the Florida Straits on Saturday.
Tropical storm watches and warnings have been issued for portions of the southern Florida Peninsula, with the potential for additional northward and inland extensions along the Florida Gulf Coast. The storm is expected to intensify into a tropical depression on Saturday over the Florida Straits and then into a tropical storm by Saturday night.

The governor's decision to amend the executive order was made in light of the potential for heavy rainfall over a large portion of the state. The forecast predicts widespread four to eight inches of rainfall and locally higher totals of at least twelve inches beginning as early as Saturday.
In his executive order, Governor DeSantis stated that "recovery efforts and those most affected by this disaster require the continued support of the State of Florida." He invoked his authority as Governor under Article IV, Section 1(a) of the Florida Constitution and the Florida Emergency Management Act to promulgate this Executive Order.
The amended Executive Order 24-157 is effective immediately and will expire upon the expiration of Executive Order 24-156. The governor urges all citizens in these affected counties to take necessary precautions and stay informed about updates on Potential Tropical Cyclone Four.
