~ On Wednesday, September 20, 2023, Governor Ron DeSantis issued Executive Order 23-185 (Executive Order of Suspension), suspending Kirk B. Reams from his position as Clerk of the Courts for Jefferson County. The order was issued after Reams was charged with Grand Theft and Organized Scheme to Defraud in violation of sections 812.014(2)(a)1 and 812.034(4)(a)1 of the Florida Statutes respectively.

The executive order states that Reams is suspended from his public office and prohibited from performing any official act, duty or function; receiving any pay or allowance; or being entitled to any of the emoluments or privileges of public office during the period of suspension. This suspension will remain in effect until a further executive order is issued or as otherwise provided by law.

The Information filed against Reams alleges that he committed felonies under the Laws of the State of Florida, which prompted Governor DeSantis to issue the executive order in accordance with Article IV, section 7(a) of the Florida Constitution.

In a statement released by Jason Mahon, Director of Communications for Governor DeSantis, he said "It is in the best interests of the residents of Jefferson County, and the citizens of the State of Florida, that Kirk B. Reams be immediately suspended from the public office which he now holds".

Reams has been serving as Clerk of Courts for Jefferson County since his appointment in 2021 and has been an active member in local government since then. He has not yet commented on his suspension but it is expected that he will do so soon.
