~ Today, Governor Ron DeSantis issued Executive Order 23-184 (Executive Order of Suspension), suspending Alejandro Diaz de la Portilla from his position as City of Miami Commissioner, District 1. On September 14, 2023, Diaz de la Portilla was arrested on nine counts including Money Laundering, Unlawful Compensation or Reward for Official Behavior, Bribery / Misuse of Public Office, Criminal Conspiracy, Official Misconduct and Campaign Contribution in Excess of Legal Limits for Political Committees.

The executive order states that the office of City of Miami Commissioner is within the purview of the suspension powers of the Governor under section 112.51 Florida Statutes and that it is in the best interests of the residents and citizens of Florida that Diaz de la Portilla be immediately suspended from public office.
The order prohibits Diaz de la Portilla from performing any official act or duty; receiving any pay or allowance; or being entitled to any emoluments or privileges during the period of suspension which will last until a further executive order is issued or as otherwise provided by law.
Governor DeSantis said in a statement: "It is important that we hold elected officials accountable when they violate the public trust. This executive order sends a clear message that we will not tolerate corruption in our state government."
