Florida: Governor Ron DeSantis Suspends Tolls To Assist Hurricane Milton Evacuations

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. ~ TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - In preparation for the impending arrival of Hurricane Milton, Governor Ron DeSantis has announced the suspension of tolls across Central Florida and West Florida, as well as Alligator Alley. This decision was made to aid in the safe and efficient evacuation of Floridians and visitors in the impacted areas.

Effective immediately at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, October 7, 2024, tolls will be waived for a period of seven days. Governor DeSantis stated that this move will help keep traffic moving and alleviate some of the stress for those preparing to evacuate.

According to Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) Secretary Jared W. Perdue, P.E., this decision was made with the safety and well-being of motorists in mind. "The Department is committed to ensuring motorists can get where they need to go as quickly and safely as possible, especially in preparation for a major hurricane," said Perdue.

The toll suspension will include facilities operated by FDOT and Florida's Turnpike Enterprise (FTE), with toll collection being reinstated on Monday, October 14 at noon. However, this timeline may be extended depending on the evolving conditions.

Facilities included in the suspension order are Alligator Alley in Collier and Broward Counties; Suncoast Parkway, I-4 Connector, Selmon Expressway, Veterans Expressway, Gateway Expressway, 275 Express, Pinellas Bayway, and Sunshine Skyway Bridge in Citrus, Hernando, Hillsborough, Pinellas and Pasco Counties; Turnpike Mainline between I-75 (MP 309) and Canoe Creek Service Plaza (MP 229), S.R. 453, S.R. 451 Wekiva Parkway Apopka Expressway Beachline Expressway Central Florida Greeneway East-West Expressway I-4 Express Western Beltway Osceola Parkway Poinciana Parkway Southern Connector Extension Seminole Expressway and Polk Parkway in Osceola, Orange, Lake, Seminole, Sumter and Polk Counties.

This toll suspension also includes facilities operated by Central Florida Expressway Authority and Tampa Hillsborough Expressway Authority.

In addition to the toll suspension, FDOT is implementing Emergency Shoulder Use along Interstate 4 (I-4) and portions of Interstate 75 (I-75) to help facilitate the flow of traffic for those evacuating the storm's potential impact area.

This service is available 24/7 and provides updates on traffic conditions, road and bridge closures, and other important alerts.
