MIAMI, Fla. ~ Miami, Fla. - On November 7th, Governor Ron DeSantis joined Floridians in commemorating Victims of Communism Day, a day dedicated to remembering the millions of lives lost under communist regimes. This solemn day of remembrance was established in Florida in 2022 through House Bill 395, which also requires students to learn about the failures and atrocities of communism.
Governor DeSantis emphasized the importance of learning from history and recognizing the destructive nature of Marxism-Leninism. "We remember those who demonstrated courage, made sacrifices and endured hardship while fighting for freedom and against communism," he stated. "We must ensure that students learn these lessons and appreciate the founding principles of our American republic."
Commissioner of Education Anastasios Kamoutsas echoed this sentiment, stating that communism has destroyed nations, silenced faith, and robbed generations of their freedoms. He reaffirmed Florida's commitment to teaching the truth about communism's atrocities and its enduring belief in liberty.

The instruction on Victims of Communism Day will cover topics such as Vladimir Lenin and the Russian Revolution, Joseph Stalin and the Soviet System, Mao Zedong and the Cultural Revolution, Fidel Castro and the Cuban Revolution, Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge, and Nicolás Maduro and the Chavismo movement.
In 2024, Governor DeSantis further expanded Florida's commitment to educating students about communism by signing Senate Bill 1264 into law. This bill requires comprehensive instruction on the history of communism beginning with the 2026-2027 school year.
To ensure that students receive a thorough understanding of how communist regimes have suppressed freedoms, abused power, and inflicted suffering across the world, the Florida Department of Education worked with educators and content experts to develop rigorous state academic standards. These proposed History of Communism standards will be presented to the State Board of Education at their upcoming meeting on November 13.
Governor DeSantis and the state of Florida are dedicated to teaching students about the lasting consequences of communism and the importance of preserving freedom and the American way of life. Through education, they hope to prevent such atrocities from ever happening again.
