KISSIMMEE, Fla. ~ KISSIMMEE, Fla. - In a major announcement today, Governor Ron DeSantis revealed that the congestion relief lanes on Interstate 4 (I-4) will be completed ahead of schedule. The additional lanes, which span over 6 miles from U.S. 27 in Polk County to World Drive in Osceola County, were originally set to open by the end of 2025. However, the project has been completed eight months early and will be open for use starting the week of April 28.

Governor DeSantis credited the success to his Moving Florida Forward initiative, which aims to accelerate transportation projects that alleviate congestion and improve connectivity. He stated, "With nearly 700 projects underway and $75 billion in infrastructure investment since 2019, we're delivering real results for Floridians and keeping Florida moving."

The governor had directed the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) to prioritize congestion relief on I-4. In response, FDOT utilized an innovative construction approach and opened the new lanes ahead of schedule without waiting for full project completion. These lanes will remain open during all future construction.

To expedite the process, FDOT launched the Moving I-4 Forward program and implemented a new Modified Phased Design-Build method that promotes collaboration and innovation. The dedicated I-4 team and its Design-Build partner worked at record speed to complete improvements well ahead of schedule.

FDOT Secretary Jared W. Perdue praised Governor DeSantis' leadership and the commitment of their industry partners in delivering this milestone. He stated, "The Moving Florida Forward Infrastructure Initiative is a model for the rest of the country, and continued investments from the Florida Legislature will keep this momentum going."

In addition to completing this project early, FDOT is also expediting work at two interchanges - C.R. 532 and World Drive - and preparing to launch more projects along a 14-mile stretch from U.S. 27 to S.R. 536. These improvements include two new express lanes and one general use lane in each direction, interchange upgrades, bridge work, resurfacing, and added safety features. The goal is to enhance traffic flow, safety, and regional connectivity by creating a continuous express lane system from Seminole County to Polk County and boosting Florida's economy.

Looking ahead, FDOT is advancing three major projects, including the Poinciana Connector which will begin construction this summer - two years earlier than anticipated. This new roadway connection will link I-4 to S.R. 429 and the future Central Florida Expressway facility, serving one of the fastest-growing areas in Osceola and Polk Counties.
